Chapter 1 - Next Generation The sound of an alarm echoes throughout an entire house early one morning. “Wake up and turn that thing off! ” An angry Terrance yells as he bangs on the bedroom door of his son, Marshall. Papers with drawings of strange planets fly around the room as the door slams open and Terrance sees an empty bed in the middle of the room. Terrance and Marina live together with their son, Marshall, and their adopted daughter, Blaire. Their house resides in a small town just outside Terrance and Marina’s Tower City, Bubble Cliffs. With Barry keeping the Wave of Fear restrained at his own Tower, he had no choice but to leave his daughter with Terrance and Marina. “Is Marshall gone already? ” A disoriented Blaire, daughter of Barry and Claire, mumbles as she stumbles down the hallway after being woken up by Marshall’s obnoxious alarm clock. “Sonny and Goldie said they’d be here early. He should have waited. ” Marshall woke up a few hours early because he wanted to find the best spot possible for the perfect view of the next Realm Eclipse. Every so often, three of the four realms will perfectly line up, causing all Towers to pulse at once and open up as passageways to other Towers. During this Grand Pulse, it is more likely for people to obtain a new power. But this isn’t what Marshall and his friends are after. Marshall, Blaire, Sonny, and Goldie already have a full set of powers with some of them even having a little extra. They have no interest in trying to get more. Over at a random cliffside overlooking a vast ocean, Marshall has set up camp for him and his friends. He has always been fascinated by the other realms that he can see floating up in the skies and the Towers that are scattered across each one. One day he wishes to travel through one of the Towers to another Realm but he knows that he isn’t ready yet. For now, he just observes from afar and draws what he sees. Sometimes he paints; sometimes he sketches; sometimes he sculpts with his Earth magic. As the hours go by, people begin to crowd along the cliffside also to watch the Realm Eclipse. Finally, Marshall hears someone call out his name and then sees Blaire fly down with her Sonic Wings and land next to him, landing on one of her Platform Glyphs to soften her landing. The sight of the Glyph causes some of the nearby people to get up and move farther away, a few of them even calling her nasty names as they move their camps. Sonny flies in shortly after using his leaf wings and instantly notices the tears in Blaire’s eyes. “What wrong? ” Sonny asks. “Some jerks saw her glyph and called her a se-“ Marshall cuts himself off when he sees Blaire’s eyes fill up with tears. “I’m okay. ” Blaire wipes her face. “They called me the Second Wave. ” “Can’t they come up with something original? Everyone knows the Wave of Fear isn’t a real thing. There is no reason to be scared of anyone with your type of powers, Blaire! ” Marshall begins to go on a rant but then stops when he realizes that one of his friends is missing. “Where’s Goldie? ” “I’m right here! ” Goldie screams as she runs toward the group. She finally catches up and falls to the ground, out of breath. “What took you so long? ” “You know I don’t like heights. I wouldn’t let one of them carry me because I didn’t want to get sick and barf up everything I Devoured. ” Goldie stands up and looks around. “Good job getting all this space! ” Goldie kisses her fingers and exhales, releasing a gigantic cloud of smoke that quickly turns into a barbecue set and cooking gear. Goldie’s Devour ability allows her to turn things into smoke and suck them up to store inside her with just a simple kiss. She can choose to release any objects stored with her ability at any time. If she gets too sick, there is a chance she will barf and uncontrollably release all that she has stored in her. With still a few hours to go before the eclipse, there is a lot of time for all of the Next Gen kids to just hang out and have fun. Only the Shadow Realm and the Chaos Realm are going to eclipse with their own realm, the Prism Realm. The Divine Realm is still visible but off to the side. They all look like large planets with large Towers that, to most people, look identical to the Tower at the center of Bubble Cliffs. Marshall has sketched the other realms enough times to noticed the differences in each of the Towers and has so far counted around twenty across the four realms. Marshall, Blaire, Sonny, and Goldie all look like teenagers but have been really alive for a lot longer. But because there are so many ways for life to be created in the Negaverse, no one ever questions why they don’t age. They were born with no powers but quickly gained some whenever a Tower near them would pulse and were all surprised with how unique their powers were. Marshall was born at the Bubble Cliffs and was shown the ropes by his parents, Terrance and Marina. Marshall has learned a lot about his Earth and Water magics from his parents but hasn’t really had a reason to train his other skills. He is more interested in the Realms and Towers up in the sky and uses all his time drawing, sculpting, and mapping what he can see. His parents support his desire to explore and encourage him to enroll into an Academy to get stronger and be able to travel to the other Towers and fight the beasts along the way. Marshall has heard the stories about the Wave of Fear but doesn’t believe any of them. He thinks the Wave is a scary story told to kids to make them behave. Blaire was born in Mute City, the city around Barry and Claire’s Fusion Tower. She was immediately sent to Terrance and Marina and adopted by them. With Barry always having to be in hibernation, keeping Claire and her Wave of Fear hibernating with him, there is no way for him to take care of his child. Blaire doesn’t know that her mother is the Wave but she knows her father is fighting it off. Unlike Marshall, she has to believe that the Wave is real or else that would mean that Barry just abandoned her for no reason. The Mute City Tower can sometimes give someone a Glyph power like Claire. These people are labeled by others as “Second Waves” and are treated by some as trash. Blaire’s friends have never shown her any disrespect. Sonny was born in the Sunshine Gardens, the area surrounding Lucile and Flora’s Fusion Tower. With no city around the Tower, Sonny’s moms chose to migrate and settle over by Bubble Cliffs and live near Terrance and Marina. Sonny quickly bonded with Marshall and Blaire and wants nothing more than to laugh and make his friends smile. He is extremely naive and carefree and greatly values all life. Goldie was born inside the Platinum Palace, which is just passed the borders of the Platinum Stadium. Right at the center of the stadium is Sterling and Sylvia’s Fusion Tower. The stadium is where the Academy tournaments are held, uniting all Academies for some friendly competition. Goldie’s parents run the tournaments and want her to enroll in an Academy so she can fight for a title but Goldie has no interest. She is obsessed with tasting and cooking new foods. After she gets sent away by her parents to live with Lucile and Flora, she becomes friends with the other Next Gens. “Time for the next course! ” Goldie screams as she bangs a giant gong she had Devoured. The delicious scent of the freshly cooked meal disperses along the cliffside. People start crowding in but are quickly blocked out by Marshall’s stone walls. One small stone wall quickly becomes five as he uses his Multiply ability. “These guys deserve nothing after the comments they made about Blaire. ” Marshall says as he sits on the picnic table that Goldie Devoured. “That smells great! ” Blaire says as she flies down from up above. “Aww! You beat me! ” Sonny says as he flies down right after Blaire. Goldie loves how her friends are always willing to try her new dishes. They have never once turned down a plate. So on special occasions like this, Goldie likes to prepare meals specifically to everyone’s taste so that they all have the best experience. Marshall’s go to is a classic surf n’ turf. He is served a fresh triclaw lobster and a juicy buffalo bear steak. Blaire’s sweet tooth is ready to eat every bite of her five layer and seventeen flavor confetti ribbon cake. Sonny is given a giant bowl of mixed red berries, bangos, marshmellons, and grapples topped with a sweet custard. Goldie, once again, combines all the foods she has made for her friends for one huge dish of her own. It is finally almost time for the Realm Eclipse. Everyone along the cliffside is staring up at the clear sky as two of the realms above slowly close in to line up with their own realm. The moment the realms line up, every Tower begins to glow and then they all at once emit a pulse so powerful that it can be seen traveling across the land and skies. The pulse passes through every living being, giving everything a sense of pure energy, peace, and bliss for just a small moment. The moment quickly fades and things go back to normal. Some people are left on their knees with tears falling down their face while others are cheering loudly as they realize they just received a new power. Most people are just happy to have been able to experience a Grand Pulse. Marshall begins to sketch the eclipse while Blaire, Sonny, and Goldie all open up a bottle of bubble pop. Their celebration is cut short when they all hear a loud roar coming from behind them. Everyone along the cliffside turns around and sees the Bubble Cliffs Tower glowing black and red. Suddenly, an enormous claw reaches out of the Tower and instantly destroys one of the smaller Bubble Cliff cities. Slowly, a creature that looks like the embodiment of fear itself slowly emerges from the Tower and begins to destroy everything in sight. The monster roars and lets out a pulse that causes everyone to instantly tremble. “What’s going on? ” Goldie falls back, barely catching herself from going over the cliff. “What is that thing? ” “Our parents are in there... ” Sonny’s voice cracks as he sheds tear from the sight of everyone in the nearby cities dying. “Is that... ” Blaire can’t believe what she is seeing. “Is that the Wave of Fear? ” “It can’t be... ” Marshall is beginning to realize that the scary stories of the Wave of Fear weren’t just stories. “The Wave isn’t real... ” There is mass hysteria as people try to run away. A good number of the people living near the Bubble Cliffs Tower have Earth or Water magic so getting off the cliffside isn’t difficult. But the use of that much magic in one concentrated area quickly gets the attention of the Wave. It roars once more as it turns and quickly makes its way to the very spot where the Next Gens are, destroying everything and everyone in its path. “What do we do? ” Goldie asks as she watches like a deer in headlights as the Wave approaches her. “I... uh... ” Marshall is still in shock. “We have to fight it! ” Sonny steps forward in front of his friends. “Are you crazy!? ” Blaire screams as she sprouts her sonic wings and blasts the sounds of a siren through the speakers on her wingtips, snapping her friends back to reality. “We gotta get out of here! ” Blaire grabs Marshall by the shoulders flies over and around the cliffs, staying as close to the shore as possible. Sonny sprouts his leaf wings, grabs Goldie, and flies closely behind Blaire. Goldie’s fear and hatred of heights causes her to get dizzy and release everything that she Devoured and had stored in her. Plates, utensils, spices, and camp gear all crash onto the ground below. Sonny and Blaire are flying as fast as they can while holding Goldie and Marshall. With everyone in a panic, Sonny hasn’t been paying attention to the position of the sun. In the Negaverse, the sun and moon rise and set multiple times a day for different periods of time. Something unique about Sonny is that his powers are directly affected by the sun. If the sun is out and shining bright, Sonny’s Nature magic will take the form of sunflowers, leaves, and other floral things. If the sun has set and the moon is out, Sonny’s Nature magic takes the form of cacti, tumbleweeds, and other desert plants. And now, unfortunate for him, the sun has just set. Sonny’s Nature magic changes and his leaf winds slowly disappear. Sonny and Goldie begin to plummet but Blaire and Marshall catch them with a Platform Glyph and a geyser. “Blaire can’t carry all of us! ” Marshall frantically says. “I have an idea! ” Blaire suggests that Goldie Devours Sonny and Marshall and then she can just fly Goldie. “I’ll just barf you guys up the second you start flying again! ” Goldie shuts down the plan real quick. “Guys... ” Sonny tries to get everyone’s attention as they all argue. “Guys! The Wave! It’s here! ” The Wave of Fear has caught up to the Next Gens and it lets out another loud roar. “We don’t have any other options! We have to fight! ” Sonny looks back at his terrified friends. “Remember, no matter what happens here: We are United! ” The Wave of Fear slashes at the Next Gens and they all scatter to avoid getting hit. Sonny summons his Blitz Orbs and launches them both forward with two powerful kicks. The Blitz Orbs shatter and spray cactus needles upon making contact with the Wave but no damage is done. Marshall summons his Scepter and the gemstone at the tip of it turns blue as he shoots out a powerful stream of water and then uses his Multiply ability to make the one powerful stream into three. His attacks are easily deflected by the Wave of Fear. Blaire flies around with her Sonic Wings, avoiding the Wave as it slashes about. She summons her Hand Bell and fires a concentrated Sound blast that chips off a piece of the Wave’s scales. The Wave’s scale lands right in front of Goldie. Even in the midst of battle, the first thing that comes to Goldie’s mind is, “I can use this in my next meal! ” She quickly kisses the scale, turning it into smoke before inhaling and Devouring it. But then, at that instant, the Wave of Fear punctures Goldie right through the heart with one of her razor sharp talons. “Noooo! ” Blaire shrieks at the sight of her friend getting killed, sending a powerful sound wave out in every direction. The Wave of Fear gets pushed back but Marshall and Sonny are badly damaged. “Sonny... ” Marshall reaches over to his friend with the last ouch of his strength. “Drain my... energy... Get Blaire and... ” Marshall coughs up a lot of blood. “es... cape... ” Sonny listens to Marshall and uses his ability to Drain what’s left of his friend’s life energy. Sonny stands up and runs to Blaire. “We have to go! ” Blaire drops down to her knees, not listening to the words that Sonny is screaming at her. “Blaire! We have to go! Blaire! Blaire! ” “It looks like me... ” Blaire says under her breath. “What? ” “The Wave of Fear. ” Blaire points to where she believes the Wave’s face is. “It looks like me. Why does it look like me!? ” “Blai-“ The Wave of Fear pierces both Sonny and Blaire with two of its pincers, instantly killing Sonny and piercing Blaire right through the stomach. Blaire’s vision starts to get blurry and then everything suddenly gets completely silent. She tries to stay awake as long as she possibly can but she knows that she doesn’t have much time left. Blaire’s eyes slowly begin to close, but in her very last moments she sees a familiar face. “Dad...? ” Blaire struggles to say with her last breath.

Panget pang 90's. [start here] [previous short story] The Tavern's Basement With a deep hum, Findt looked around in their room. The room was stuffy, it smelled like wet dog and old smoke. The only source of light was the window in the roof, it sent a ray of light to the floor – reflected by dust particles. There was a cheap, unlit candle on the table in the corner of the room. Two separate beds at the wall to the hallway. When Connari came in they let themselves fall onto the first bed, which let Findt smile. He sat down at the table and lit the candle with the Sign of Igni before setting down the pouch and getting out the things he needed. He was running short on potions and he had to compensate for that by making a few more. Few of them were antidotes and thing for emergencies, others he took strategically before battles. Connari watched him work for a bit before falling asleep. In the morning the two would go on the first quest together and they had to make sure they had enough sleep. People kept disappearing in this town and Findt could really use the money. *** By noon Findt had found some tracks he could work with. Connari was following him, and they were quiet for once and tried their best to let him work. They were impressed and slightly intimidated by the witcher’s skills and confidence. Findt was (for the first time since Connari was with him) carrying both swords on his back. He was in his leather armour and his hair was out of his face. His golden eyes were darting around as he assessed their surroundings. There were small tracks on the ground, almost invisible Between the trees, something man-made came into view. The ruins of a building destroyed at least a decade ago. What was left of the walls was overgrown by plants and moss. Findt froze and looked at it as if he was paying respects to what had happened before he motioned Connari to follow him. “What happened here? ” Connari asked quietly. “It was a tavern, the kind that mainly serves the upper class, priests and other wealthy people. One night a mage, who had been staying there turned insane and blew himself up. People of the region avoid this place, say it is haunted. ” Findt looked down at the tracks again and started following them. Connari frowned. There was not a lot left to be haunted. Just pieces of the surrounding walls were still standing. Slowly Connari followed, trying to be as quiet as possible. When the two stepped closer to the ruins it seemed like the sky darkened and the wind sped up. Connari watched how Findt walked around the ruins, searching for something. A smirk played around his lips as he saw something, there was a place where the rubble was lying differently, he went there, the Cintran kept following him. The witcher still did not draw his sword. Then Connari could see it too, a huge gap between the rubble, if the tavern had had a basement that hole had to lead down there. Findt grunted as he squatted down to see what was going on down there, while the human-only saw a mouth of darkness. With an expression of concern, Connari watched how he climbed down and jumped the rest of the way, hesitantly they followed, climbed down backwards. After a couple of feet, they realised that their feet had nothing to stand on, so they jumped. The fall took longer than expected, they fell several meters. Blue light flashed up when they hit the ground and the impact didn’t hurt. “Don’t do this again, ” Findt grumbled and looked at her. “Sorry. ” Connari stared into the dark, not sure where he was standing. “Thanks. ” “Shh, ” the witcher said and turned around. There was a crickling sound, like leaves being blown in the wind. Connari still could not see anything but darkness and the tiny bit of light coming from the surface. They heard the singing of Findt’s sword when he unsheathed it. The crickle became louder until it didn’t sound like leaves anymore, rather like thousands of tiny legs crawling over the stone floor. “Don't move, don't even breathe, ” Findt whispered. Connari tensed up and got their sword out. They closed their eyes and as soon as they felt the spiders crawling over them, they held their breath. The second the spiders had passed the two, the basement was lit up by a flame — Findt had cast fire on some of the spiders, which lit up like matches. Connari could now see their surroundings clearly. The spiders had the size of a hand and eight, extremely hairy legs. The other spiders rushed towards the few on fire as if trying to help them but catching fire themselves. Findt's silver blade shone, reflecting the light of the growing flames and more and more spider caught on fire. The witcher turned around on his heels to face a part of the basement which remained in shadows. “Stay behind me, ” he advised the Cintran. “The spiders are only the pilot fish. They can't eat people. ” Findt held his sword in his right hand, his footing stable while his right hand still hovered, ready to cast another Sign. He had implied that there was another threat down here. His golden eyes were glowing in the fiery shine as he stared down, where the basement continued. Connari did not hesitate and stepped behind Findt. Now, they heard it too — steps in the dark. A huge insectoid monster, several meters wide, appeared in their field of view. The rest of the spiders, who had not been burned yet turned around and headed back to the two. Findt's hand moved swiftly in the air as he drew the Sign of Yrden, where the bigger monster was standing, rendering it immobile. So Findt could swiftly slay the smaller spiders with his blade, the rest he set on fire. Once the last spider had stopped moving, Findt jumped at the monster and struck it a few times until he stabbed it through the head. Findt pulled it back out and looked up at them, in the fading light of burning spiders. “Are we done? ” Connari asked, trembling a bit. “No, ” the witcher replied and sheathed his sword. He walked over to the wall and took a torch out of its bracket, he lit it with a Sign and then handed it to Connari. “Keep your sword at the ready and follow me. ” Connari nodded and followed him to where the monster had come from. The burnt shells of the spiders crack beneath their feet. “If you still want to hunt monsters after this, so be it. ” Findt stopped to look at them. “Just know that this kind never lives alone and that it will get rough when several of them attack. Stick with me and do as I say and you should be alright. ” They nodded and followed Findt, the torch in one, their sword in the other hand. The professional monster-slayer was walking at a swift pace. His left hand quickly reached over his shoulder and his sword jumped into his hand, just on time before he leapt forward to attack the monster. The monster was a huge badger, as big as a horse. It had glowing eyes and it was incredibly strong. Connari stayed back at the wall and watched the fight unravel. They watched how Findt dodged the monster’s paws. It looked like a dance, an abstract ballet. The fight only lasted a minute and then there was silence. Findt looked at Connari and raised both eyebrows before he turned back to the monster and beheaded it. “Now. We are done. ” Findt said and started dragging the badger’s head towards the exit. *** The man flinched as Findt dropped the still dripping head of the gigantic badger onto the floor in front of his feet. “You specifically stated you wanted proof, ” Findt said with a calm tone, “I’m sorry. ” The man frowned. “Here, Witcher, ” the man gave Findt a bag of gold. “It would be great if you left town now. ” Findt nodded and took the gold. “Have a good day, ” said Findt and turned around. Connari was waiting outside and headed with him towards Goldy. “How did it go? ” the Cintran asked. “We got paid, that's all that matters. Time to get out of this town. ” “How are you not bothered by people being mean, even after you did your job? ” “Witchers got not a great reputation. The Wolves got the best of us all but even they are outcasts. The only thing I can do is to be polite and do my job to the best of my ability. ” Connari nodded and waited until Findt got on his horse so they could sit down behind him. Slowly Goldy started moving and once they had left town Findt sped up the horse. “Have you made your decision yet? ” asked Findt after they had ridden for a while. “Yes. ” Connari made a dramatic pause. “You saved my life now you need to take care of me. Plus I really want to become a monster-slayer. ” Findt groaned. “Terrific! ” The sarcasm in his voice was hard to miss. “Alternatively I could help you to find a guild. You would make a great craftsperson. ” Connari chuckled. “I already found my guild. ” “You know that you are too old to become a witcher, right? I mean I could teach you about monsters, basic alchemy and magic but you won't have the mutations full witchers have. And we do have them for a reason. Monsters are a tough enemy, our bodies are perfected to deal with them. Without the mutation, you would need to compensate with skill elsewhere or you are dead pretty quickly. ” “Yeah. I know. And I don’t care. I don’t want to get old and regret that I never followed my dream. ” Findt could understand that. Even though he had never chosen to be a witcher he did understand the thrill it gave to people.
